My name is Lidia Mondragon, I believe that dreams do come true, by understanding that achievement requires faith and belief in oneself. One must also have vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. All things are possible for those who believe.
My parents came to the United States with a dream to give their children a life that was not possible in their country. After all, didn’t this country begin with people dreaming about finding something new to better their lives? I was brought to the United States when I was seven, and in the past ten years I have had to overcome many challenges put in my path to get closer to my dream: learning a new language, becoming familiar with the laws of the United States, and surviving the relentless prejudice from people in my community. My parents’ dreams will come true through me because neither of them had the opportunity to obtain a higher education. I will be the first in my family to achieve the dream of having a college education. Many of my Hispanic friends and school mates, have either dropped out of high school or been pulled into gangs.
Even though these obstacles were thrown at me, I chose not to just get pulled down to the ground without getting back up and learning from it. I have been a high achieving student and have earned the respect and friendship of my classmates, teachers, and neighbors. I will become a successful bi-lingual pediatrician because I am committed and strong. I can achieve anything I put my mind to because I have learned to overcome difficult circumstances.
Please help me by giving me the opportunity to achieve the American dream of a higher education. I will achieve my dream of becoming an important participant in my community and this great nation. Because I do not have a social security number, I need private financing for college. However, I am confident that generous people like you will invest in my dream and my future. Thank you so much.
